What is a Granny Pod?
Well, let’s go back to those times when a son or daughter might be having issues with housing their parent. Some may be reluctant to take their parents to a nursing home simply because of the cost and inability to see and spend time with their parents daily (for those attached to their parents). Also, adult children may not want their parents to live in the main house with them to avoid friction between their parent and spouse. This is a difficult situation and most usually succumb to taking their parents to a nursing home. I am glad to inform you that those days are in the past with the availability of granny pods.
Granny pod, also known as granny flats, MEDCottage or accessory dwelling units. is a portable hospital room designed by a Blacksburg, VA company, with help from Virginia Tech. It is meant to be installed within the home of your adult child, preferably their backyard. The idea is to have a kind of private condo you can stay in with your privacy intact while still being close to your children or caregiver and not impeding on their own personal lives with their spouse or children. With close proximity to your caregiver, the caregiver can easily monitor your health and needs accordingly.
How much do granny pods cost?
Affordability of granny pods is relative to the person looking to install it. For low income earners, it may seem pretty expensive, however for high earning earners, it may seem very cheap. The granny pod prices range from about $40,000 to $250,000 depending on the features that are needed. A granny pod with high tech accessories like cameras and alert systems (to alert caregivers if there is any problem with the senior, they are taking care of) is expected to be more expensive than one which just has the basic necessities. It is left to you to decide what you need and what you don’t. Bear in mind that it is fully customizable based on your needs.
Legality of Grannypods
Even though granny pods are attached to the main house. Ie (water, power, sewer lines) kindly note that you might need to get the granny pod structure approved by local agencies. This is due to restrictions on structures per land that may be present in your state.
